Budgetary Control and Variance Analysis
A 10-day budgetary control course on monitoring spending, analysing variances, forecasting outturns and taking corrective action that sticks.
Course overview
Approving a budget is the easy part; keeping spending and results on track for twelve months is harder. Many organisations produce monthly variance reports that nobody acts on, so overspends and missed targets surface only at year end. This budgetary control course gives finance and budget staff the tools to monitor budgets closely, understand why variances arise and drive timely corrective action.
The first week covers the budgetary control framework, responsibility accounting, standard costing, flexible budgets and the calculation and interpretation of price, volume, mix and efficiency variances. Participants build variance reports in Excel and learn to separate meaningful variances from noise. The second week focuses on management action: in-year forecasting and outturn projections, commitment control, investigating variances with budget holders, corrective action plans, reporting to boards, and the behavioural side of budgetary control. A running case follows a public agency and a manufacturing company through a full budget year.
Participants leave able to run an effective budgetary control process that turns variance analysis into better decisions.
