Strategic Budgeting: Development and Execution
A strategic budgeting course on linking budgets to strategy, prioritising resources and executing budgets so plans become results.
Course overview
Many organisations have strategic plans and annual budgets that barely speak to each other. Resources follow last year's figures rather than this year's priorities, and execution drifts as the year unfolds. This strategic budgeting course helps finance and planning leaders connect strategy to resources and keep budgets on course during execution.
Participants learn how strategy should drive budget priorities, from medium-term expenditure frameworks in government to rolling plans in companies. They practise translating strategic objectives into programmes, costing them, and making allocation choices under constraints through prioritisation and trade-off techniques. The execution part covers budget release and cash planning, in-year monitoring, reallocation rules, managing risks to delivery and engaging budget holders and boards. Emerging tools such as scenario planning and analytics-supported forecasting are introduced. Cases draw on national and county government budgets and on regional state corporations.
Participants leave able to build budgets that reflect strategy and to steer them through execution towards results.
