Monitoring and Evaluation with GIS Mapping

A monitoring and evaluation with GIS course on M&E essentials plus mapping programme data in QGIS to show where results are happening.

5 days Classroom, online or in-house QR-verified certificate Next intake 19 Oct 2026

Course overview

Programme results are rarely spread evenly. Some sub-counties receive more services, some communities improve faster and some areas are missed entirely. Maps reveal these patterns in ways tables cannot. This monitoring and evaluation with GIS course combines the essentials of M&E with practical mapping skills so that participants can track and show results geographically.

Participants first cover M&E essentials: results frameworks, indicators, data collection and reporting. They then learn the basics of geographic information systems: spatial data, coordinate systems, collecting GPS points with mobile tools, and importing programme data. Using the free QGIS software, they practise creating maps of service coverage, indicator performance by area and gaps in reach, and combine programme data with census and administrative boundaries. The course ends with designing clear maps for reports and dashboards and interpreting spatial patterns for decision-making. Participants work on laptops throughout using sample Kenyan datasets.

Participants leave able to monitor programmes and present results on clear, accurate maps.

What you will be able to do

  • Apply M&E essentials to programme monitoring
  • Explain GIS concepts and spatial data
  • Collect location data with mobile tools
  • Create maps of coverage and indicator performance in QGIS
  • Combine programme data with boundary and census data
  • Present and interpret maps for decision-making

Who should attend

For M&E officers, planners and programme staff who want to add mapping to their M&E work. Participants should bring a laptop; no GIS experience is needed.

  • Monitoring and evaluation officers
  • Planning officers
  • Programme officers
  • County data officers
  • Health and agriculture programme staff
  • NGO field coordinators
