Strategic Leadership and Board Governance

A 10-day board governance course for directors and executives on board roles, strategic oversight, risk, accountability and board effectiveness.

10 days (2 weeks) Classroom, online or in-house QR-verified certificate Next intake 19 Oct 2026

Course overview

Boards of state corporations, regulators, banks, SACCOs and companies carry heavy responsibilities, yet many directors join without formal governance training. Weak boards fail to challenge management, overlook risks or interfere in operations, with costly consequences. This board governance course equips directors and senior executives to make boards work.

The first week covers the foundations of board leadership: governance principles and codes, legal duties of directors, board structure and composition, the roles of chair, chief executive and company secretary, board-management relations, and strategic oversight. The second week focuses on board effectiveness: oversight of risk and internal control, financial oversight and audit committees, stakeholder relations and sustainability, ethics and conflicts of interest, board meetings and papers, board evaluation and director development, and governance in crisis. Regional governance codes and case studies of board failures and successes are used throughout.

Participants leave able to contribute effectively to board leadership and to strengthen governance in their organisations.
